Russia, 1938, and the all-powerful dictator Stalin has an idea. He wants someone to write a biography of his heroic career- and who better than his favorite author, Mikhail Bulgakov? The trouble is, Bulgakov is so terrified he cant write- so Stalin makes a suggestion: “I’ll do the script, you run the country.”

That’s the premise, based on an actual historical event, behind Hodge’s surreal black-comedy. The Play earned Hodge he Oliver ward for the best new play and promises to be a rare chance to see a modern classic.
