The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
By Jay Presson Allen, adapted from the novel by Muriel Spark
Synopsis:
At the Marcia Blaine School for Girls in Edinburgh Miss Jean Brodie teaches her favourites, the "creme de la creme", to follow an alternative curriculum, one which celebrates beauty, secrecy, conspiracy and anti-establishment views. Her philosophy is: "Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life".
Four pupils, the sharp-tongued Sandy, beautiful Jenny, quick-witted Monica and hapless Mary, struggle to make sense of Miss Brodie's world. As for Brodie herself, her manipulative and duplicitous ways lead ulitmately in this gripping play to her own destruction...brought about by one of her very own "girls".
Continuing Next Stage's 15th Birthday year of memorable productions, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie has an outstanding cast led by Caroline Groom as Jean Brodie and Joanna Bowman as Headmistress Miss Mackay. Joining the adult actors are twelve talented Next Stage Youth members playing the Marcia Blaine pupils.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is an unmissable production by a company in its very own "prime".

Review 1: Preview: le creme de la creme for Next Stage

The story, which was originally a book, then became a play starring Vanessa Redgrave and finally a film with Maggie Smith, is being performed at the Mission Theatre by Next Stage. Where Next Stage scores in this case is having a strong youth group on which to draw for many of…click here to read the whole review.

Review 2: The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie: Next Stage
Next Stage has done a remarkable thing in following on from a series of super successful film and TV versions of this play and staging a production under the direction of Ann Garner that is quite captivating. When an actress of the calibre of Maggie Smith delivers the definitive version of a character like Jean Brodie – much as Liza Minnelli made the role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret all her own –…click here to read the whole review.
