The story is set in 1937 in the Wingfield’s apartment in a shabby tenement building in St Louis, Missouri. Laura, Tom’s sister, crippled by polio as a child and finding solace in the fragile ornaments in her “glass menagerie”, lives here with Amanda her over-bearing mother.
