Briggs: I thought this trip was organised so that the kids could see Conwy Castle?
Colin: The only principle behind today is that the kids should have a good day out. (Act I)
Mrs Kay’s remedial class are out for the day from their inner-city Liverpool comprehensive on a trip to North Wales. For many of them it’s the first time they’ve travelled that far from their home town. However, there is one cloud on the horizon: the headteacher has sent Mr Briggs - a disciplinarian - to keep an eye on all the goings-on. For 15 year-olds Reilly and Digga - who have blagged their way onto the trip - and for Linda and Karen, neither of whom want to be on it at all, the thought of spending the day with Briggs holds little appeal. For 13 year-old Carol, the trip is an escape from the poverty and misery of her day-to-day life in a Liverpool slum.
Talented playwright Willy Russell, drawing on personal experience from when he taught at a comprehensive school in 1973-4, creates a play in which mayhem and magic are present in equal measure. Staged, in an immersive promenade layout, at The Mission Theatre by Artistic Director Ann Ellison BEM, why not come along, get on the coach and follow the school party as their day out changes some of their lives forever.
A fast-paced, fun-filled production nobody will want to miss. Book your tickets now.
