Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, adapted for the stage by Nicholas Omerod and Declan Donnellan

Tuesday 14th - Saturday 18th February at 7.30pm with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday 18th

The talented and highly-acclaimed Next Stage Youth Theatre Company excel as they bring this gritty adaptation of Dickens’ least sentimental love story to the stage with a cast of some of his most unforgettable characters:

“My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip”.

Whilst at his parents’ graveside, Pip is accosted by Magwitch, an escaped convict from a prison ship. Terrified, he is forced to help the man to get away. An unexpected invitation to the house of rich old Miss Havisham forces Pip into the path of her beautiful, cruel ward Estella and their strange, ruthless games. After an anonymous benefactor grants him a small fortune, Pip turns his back on his humble life as a blacksmith’s apprentice. Leaving his sister, her husband Joe Gargery and the winsome Biddy, Pip moves to London to become a gentleman in the hopes of winning Estella. But he has no idea of the dangers that await him there, or from where his salvation will come, but come it does:

“I took her hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place; and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first left the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.”

Great Expectations is an unforgettable tale from one of our greatest storytellers. Come to The Mission Theatre and let over 30 of Next Stage’s talented young actors entertain you with this fast-paced, imaginatively-staged production which will delight audiences both young and old alike.
